ABOUT WNHA |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the summer of 1982, 18 interested local people and invited guests met to explore the feasibility of establishing a cooperating association with Parks Canada in Waterton Lakes National Park. At that meeting the groundwork was laid for drafting of bylaws, a statement of objectives, election of directors, sale of memberships and registration with the Province of Alberta. The Waterton Natural History Association was incorporated as a registered charity under the laws of the Province of Alberta in August 1982. A Co-operating Agreement was signed with Parks Canada on May 9, 1988. Since that time, the WNHA has moved steadily forward with a base of over 350 members and the commitment of dedicated directors, volunteers and paid staff. The WNHA operates in a special relationship with Parks Canada. We share common goals, ideals and challenges. Our Co-operating Agreement details expectations of both partners. The Park relies on the WNHA to provide certain services and maintain certain facilities for the benefit of the public and in return, the WNHA relies on the Park to provide certain opportunities to enhance this work. Initially, contribution funding was available to the WNHA from Parks Canada to purchase products for sale, publish guide books and establish an office, providing a catalyst for future work. The WNHA operates out of three facilities: the business office located at 306 Waterton Avenue, adjacent to the campground, is where all storage and administration functions are carried out; the Heritage Centre, at 117 Waterton Avenue, is the association's retail outlet and small museum providing information to the visiting public. The Crooked Creek Campground is located six kilometres outside the park.
